Garage Renovations and Interior Design

There are many things that you are able to do to your garage while renovating that will showcase  your personality and spice up the design. Depending on what your personal aesthetic is, what you utilize your garage for, or what will make your life easiest, there are many ways to incorporate your lifestyle into your design choices.

Why would I care about the interior of my garage?

Many people see the interior of their garage as unimportant– a place where things are stored, equipment is thrown around, and where cars sit for the night. However, just like any other space in your home, it is a space that you likely see every day, and therefore it should help you to experience positive emotions when you look at it.

How to spice up the interior of your garage

There are a variety of ways to make your garage feel more like home and to spice up your interior design game. From playing with different colors to finding more creative ways for storage, it is what you make of it!

Cluttered garage interior

The first step to refurbishing the interior of your garage is to declutter it. Image courtesy of Unsplash.

Declutter

This one may seem like common sense, but it also can be really difficult for a lot of people to do. Sometimes, the garage is the last thing on our to-do list. It is something we do not really think about because many people only use it when passing through. But, decluttering can be a great way to aid you in utilizing your garage more often.

Spring cleaning is a great way to think about decluttering. Getting rid of the things that you have not used in a while (or have never used) will make you feel so much lighter, and you can rest easier knowing that someone else will be able to utilize the item you have had sitting around for months or years. Although this may not seem like an interior design idea, oftentimes this is the first step to making interior design in any space look great.

Keep your paint up to date

Rather than heading straight for adding a bunch of things to your garage to make it look nicer, start with refreshing what is already there. Adding a fresh coat of paint to the walls can make a world of difference in a garage, no matter what the rest of the space looks like.

In addition to this, keeping the walls clean is just as important as adding a fresh coat of paint. Sometimes, you don’t even need to repaint, you just need to give them a good scrub and call it a day.

Consider tile

Tile is a sleek and trendy way to spruce up your garage and make it unique. It can make a garage look more elegant and give it the feel of a car dealership, if you so choose to park your car in your garage rather than use it for other activities. This is also a great way to add color or pattern to your space to make it look larger, brighter, or just more put together.

They make special tiles that are made for garage floors and safe for vehicles to park on. This makes it safer for your car, and gives your new floor longevity when you are parking on it and using it as a work space, rather than installing a regular tile floor.

Lighting

Adding lighting that compliments your space could completely transform your garage. Many people make the mistake of only utilizing overhead lighting in their garage, which makes the lighting harsh and encourages people not to be in their garages often. Depending on what you use your garage for, it can be helpful to have multiple different types of lighting. Of course overhead lighting is necessary, but having lighting at your workstation, or task lighting, can add brightness to your space but still have a purpose.

Just like any other part of your house, adding accent lighting can add ambiance and dimension to the room. Whether this is wall fixtures or ground lights that create a lengthening effect to the walls, having different types of lighting rather than just one kind can create an elegance that you wouldn’t expect a garage to have.

Adding storage

Add more storage than just general containers to hold things. Putting in cabinetry like you would inside of a house will make your garage look more put together, keep your belongings safe and hidden, and all of your things will not be on display. Some people will opt for floor to ceiling cabinets, others may prefer smaller cabinets across the middle of the wall.

This can also create the illusion of a clean garage, even if you have a lot of clutter. No one wants a cluttered garage, but sometimes you just cannot help it. Garages are not always the biggest, and oftentimes, people tend to have a lot of stuff to put in them. So, this can be a great way to make it seem like the garage is a little more put together.

Add a mudroom

Although this is not in the garage, it can be a great addition to the house that compliments the garage well. If you have a garage connected to your house, transforming the hallway connecting the two, or the room, if you have one, into a mudroom can make the space feel more luxurious and welcoming.

This also works if your garage is not connected to the house, but usually works best if you have a side or back door on your home, whichever is closest to your garage. Turning your foyer space into a mudroom is also a great addition to the house. It also is a nice way to ensure your house remains clean, because it encourages people to take their shoes off when entering.

Ultimately, all that matters is what makes you and your family happier and comfortable. Image courtesy of Unsplash.

All in all, your garage is a reflection of what you utilize it for. So, whatever works best for you and your family functionally is what you should think about while you are renovating.
